At Acuveda we have a passion for holistic medicine. Coupled with our experience, we are proud to assist you with a wide array of Ayurvedic detoxification therapies to help bring your body and mind back into balance. Ayurvedic detoxification can be cleansing for a number of reasons, including purification and balance.

Detoxification therapy requires a careful balance, which is why it is essential to seek treatment from an experienced healer. This balance is important so as not to disrupt the doshas (mind/body operating principles), dhatus (body tissues), or malas (body wastes). While solving one problem, we don’t want to create another problem somewhere else.

In Ayurveda, there are three primary toxins: ama, amavisha, and garvisha. Ama develops during incomplete digestion due to factors such as poor diet, over or undereating, going to bed on a full stomach, or eating too soon after the last meal. It can affect the flow of nutrients throughout your body, as well as disrupt the body’s natural waste removal.

Amavisha is a more intense version of ama, which occurs when ama settles into a part of your body for too long. Despite stemming from it, amavisha must be dealt with differently than ama.

Garvisha is entirely different from the other two kinds of toxins and comes from external sources. These may include environmental toxins like chemicals, pesticides, preservatives, pollution, cleaners, heavy metals, and genetically engineered and spoiled foods, to name a few.

There are several methods of Ayurvedic detoxification, including one and three day cleanses, traditional Ayurvedic cleanse (lasting several days to weeks), modified fasting, drinking teas made of Ayurvedic herbs, and Panchakarma. Panchakarma is an involved and deeply cleansing series of traditional therapies that include Basti (herbalized oil enemas), Nasya (nasal irrigation), Virechana (purgation), as well as oil massage and others. These should always be done under the supervision of an experienced Ayurvedic practitioner.

Benefits of Ayurvedic detoxification therapies include the following:

  • Restoring balance and sense of calm to the mind and nervous system
  • Increasing clarity in mental, emotional, and spiritual spheres
  • Improving energy and vitality
  • Helping maintain a healthy body weight
  • Balancing sleep cycles
  • Promoting regular elimination
  • Improving overall health and sense of wellbeing

As with any significant change to your diet or routine, you should discuss any medical conditions you have with your practitioner. This way, we can ensure you are safely able to tolerate whichever detoxification therapy we feel is best for you. It also allows us to tailor your detoxification if we know the maladies from which you are suffering.
